Shetland ponies originated in the Shetland Isles. The Shetland Islands
northeast of Scotland were once connected to Norway 8,000 years ago at the
end of the last Ice Age. It is believed that Shetland ponies are descendants
of ancient Scandinavian horses that adapted to the harsh climate of the
“new” Bronze Age era islands in this North Sea region. Whatever their origin
it’s no doubt these ponies are hardy animals and make a wonderful calendar
for horse lovers.
